Reminiscence Outreach

Down memory lane logo pictureAn initial Reminiscence Outreach 'Down Memory Lane' pilot scheme was implemented during 2004 by Torfaen County Borough Council, to establish the needs of people who are unable to visit our venues.

Staff from Pontypool Museum were asked to visit a total of 16 Nursing Homes and Sheltered Accomodation centres throughout Torfaen Borough with artefacts and photographs from the collections.

The sessions proved to be a great success. The management teams and the staff involved were very appreciative of our efforts, often joining in and encouraging the residents to take part.Reminiscence session in nursing home

The residents were very happy to be entertained and engaged in such an activity, which helped to take them out of their immediate surroundings. We, in turn, obtained a great deal of valuable information from them as they were able to tell us about some of the artefacts and also give valuable background information to some of the photographs.

Many residents expressed a willingness to record their memories for posterity, whilst others donated a variety of items to the museum. We believe they truly appreciated our visits, many of them thanking us for taking the time to go out and see them. Hopefully, this valuable service to the community will be established on a more permanent basis in the future, giving these people the opportunity for another wander 'down memory lane'.
